Upstairs Downstairs, season premiere at 9pm on PBS

– During the quick three-episode debut season last year, Sir Hallam Holland (Ed Stoppard),  and his wife, Lady Agnes, moved into an abandoned house. It was 1936, a tumultuous time in Britain, and within the walls of 165 Eaton Place, characters from an orphanage, a damp Welsh castle, the heart of the British Raj and elsewhere together faced a changing world, not just upstairs and downstairs, but side by side. The period drama’s second season picks back up in 1938 and all is not well. The house witnesses a murder, Hitler is playing hardball with our diplomatic hero Sir Holland, and worst of all, newly hired maid Beryl Ballard (Laura Haddock) wants to wear her own stockings. The refurbished series isn’t as sharp as the 70s originals and the Hollands aren’t as juicy as Downton’s Granthams but it’s still a whole lot of fun to look at.
